The Old Town Island

A place begins
with a storyStory concept by Nejib Ghanmi at Landor Associates

For Emaar's Old Town Island beside Burj Khalifa, Nejib conceived a legend that gave a new place a human beginning: two children, a desert rose and the belief that something precious is worth protecting.

  1. I

    The rose

In the desert, Nejib and Leila found a rose in need of care. The children understood that its life was precious.

  2. II

    The water

Day after day, they saved part of their water ration and carried it in their mouths across the dunes to the valley where the rose grew. Slowly, the plant began to flourish.

  3. III

    The storm

After a storm, they returned beneath a clear, moonlit sky. Where the towering dune had stood, they discovered a new wonder.

  4. IV

    The city

As dawn broke, a city carved from sandstone appeared beside a still, freshwater lake.

  5. The legend became the emotional foundation of The Old Town Island: a place rising from an act of care, and a testament to dedication, faith and vision. It was told through an illustrated storybook that carried the development's identity into the hands of its first residents.

Practice

We take a brand from its foundation to its physical form. Strategy sets the direction, design gives it a face and a voice, and architecture builds the place where people meet it.

Brand strategy

We find what an organisation truly is and set the territory it can own: positioning, brand architecture, naming and the story that holds everything together.

Led by Nejib

Design and art direction

Identity systems, packaging, editorial and campaigns, built with Italian discipline and a craftsman's attention to type, image and print.

Led by Andrea

Architecture and retail

Retail, hospitality and workplace interiors where the idea is felt before it is read. From concept and planning to material, light and the finished detail.

Led by Carlos

We can also help you with

Naming and voice

Names, tone of voice and messaging that let a brand sound like itself in Arabic, English and Italian, in a boardroom or on a shelf.

Wayfinding and roll-out

Signage, environmental graphics and guidelines that keep a brand consistent from the first store to the fiftieth.

Our DNA

Mediterranean by nature. Exacting by habit.

We share a Mediterranean way of living and working. Some people hear that and picture long lunches and loose deadlines. We know it differently. It is the artisan who stays until the joint is right, the cook who will not send out a plate before it is ready, and the table where the real decision gets made because everyone cared enough to argue it out. We bring the same habit to every brand, page and room we design.

Detail

We notice what others walk past: the weight of a paper stock, the radius on a counter edge, a word that is almost right.

Passion

We care about the work the way owners do. It shows in the things we refuse to let go of until they are right.

Rigour

Behind the warmth there is method. Every decision is argued, tested and justified before it reaches the client.

Partners

Three disciplines, three traditions and one standard. The people who present the work are the people who make it.
